Ringo makes sure you have fun
Front row seats we were blessed to have had, as we sat right in front of Todd Rundgren, a long time fan of whom I am. I thought one of the highlights of the show was his Love Is The Answer. Driveways and his band mates' mission is to ensure we all had a good time, as it was obvious they weren't bored either. His voice sounds as youthful, powerful and soothing as it did when he played with Santana and Journey decades ago, Gregg Rollie's. I loved hearing the beautiful whirling sound of his organ. He is still a wonderful piano player and singer. One of the first bands I ever saw in concert 40 years ago was with him. Journey played a free concert at SPAC with Blue Oyster Cult. I heard the MC announcing the 5 original members of Journey who opened the show and their resumes. Richard Page is a beautiful singer with groovy bass playing. His new original song was absolutely beautiful, and I hope it will be on an upcoming album. Steve Lukather's mesmerizing guitar playing was a testament to Page's composition skills. Drummer Gregg Bisonette kept things tight and groovy throughout the night. Ringo sang some of The Beatles songs you would expect and love. But a 2-hour show was generous enough. Steve Lukather played Santana's parts confidently when Gregg sang. I think it would have been much cooler if Todd Rundgren were given more chances he deserves to shine. The Event Center at Turning Stone is the nicest place overall where I have ever seen a concert. Makes me want to relocate to that part of the state. A front row seat for he and Todd was something I will never forget. And we were so impressed with the genuine politeness and hospitality we received from EVERYONE who works there. The Lukather solos would have been a lot more interesting if the 2 virtuosos had traded off licks. Sometimes less is more. But there is only one Ringo. He could have easily filled another hour with Beatles songs on which he did lead vocals as well as great songs from his own solo catalog. On Rosanna, and some of his other solos however started out captivating, but then got rather self-indulgent and went on way too long. I mean that as a compliment. I think it was way too long. And a front row seat for he and Todd was something I will never forget.
